The ability to become financially independent is very new to women, relatively speaking. For most of human history, women were dependent on men financially. Women couldn't own property or keep their own wealth. It wasn't until the Equal Credit Opportunity Act of 1974 (thank you RBG!) that women were guaranteed the right to make independent financial decisions in the United States.
